Tone of voice determination

Tone of voice determination

What is tone of voice (emotion)?

Tone of voice is the emotional connotation of a message, usually containing the author's subjective evaluation of a certain object.
It is important to realize that this is not a state of fact, pleasant or not, but the emotional tone itself.

How is tone of voice determined in the Semantrum system?

The so-called object-oriented algorithm (Entity related sentiment analysis) is used for tone of voice determination. That is, the emotional coloring of posts is determined not just for the publication as such, but in relation to the monitored object in the topic. The monitored object is the keywords that are defined as "Highlighted words" in your topic(s).
When creating a topic by the system manager or by the user, you should enter the words and phrases in a separate field of the highlighted keywords regarding which the tone of voice will be determined (more details about that here).

For example, a publication may have a generally negative emotional tone if it relates to the topic of corruption, but if the article falls within the monitoring topic of an anti-corruption government agency, it may be neutral (depending on the content of the article), since the tone of voice is determined specifically in relation to that government agency.

The publication will receive a tone for each topic to which it belongs in your account. That is, if there are several monitoring objects in the document (i.e., one document got to several topics), it may have a different tone of voice in relation to each mentioned monitoring object.

In the Semantrum system, users can:
  1. use a publication tone of voice filter;
  2. make saved queries using the tone filter and receive notifications when publications of a certain tone appear, for example - receive allerts on negative mentions;
  3. independently correct the automatically determined tone of voice, edit the tone for many publications simultaneously and for the story/multiple stories;
  4. filter the publications with the automatically determined tone of voice and the publications with the tone that can be corrected by the user;
  5. use publication tone of voice data in publication list exports and automatic report exports;
  6. get publication tone of voice data in standard charts and customized dashboards.

Tone of voice display

Each document in the publication feed has a color tone of voice indicator. This indicator displays the tone of voice of the document by the monitoring object of the topic in which the user is currently located.

A user with appropriate rights can edit the tone of documents (either a single document or many selected documents). Learn more about user roles and rights. Read more about how to change the tone of a publication.

If a user has changed a document's tone of voice, the tone of voice indicator is displayed as a dotted line. If a user has changed the tone of voice of a document, other users in the same account will also see that document with a changed tone of voice.

Please note:
If you need to return to the automatic tone of voice, you can do so by re-filling this topic with documents for the required period. Read more about editing and filling topics.

Filters are available in the Filters panel by tone, and by whether the tone has been changed by the user.

What to do when...
I see the tone of voice indicator on the publication and it is multicolored, what does it mean?
It happens when more than one topic is selected for sampling, a document is in several topics at the same time, and has a different tone of voice relative to the different monitoring objects mentioned in the document. The indicator shows the publication tone of voice for the selected topics in proportion to how many times the publication is defined as neutral or negative for the selected topics.

The tone indicator is transparent and blinks.
This occurs if, for certain technical reasons, the system was unable to process the document and determine its tone of voice. A few seconds are usually enough for this process to complete.

Is the tone of voice indicator mixed (dashed)?
This happens if the tone of voice has been changed manually.

Enjoy using the Semantrum system!
